Dražen Petrovic, born on October 22, 1964, in Šibenik, Croatia, showcased his basketball talent early, learning from his older brother, Aleksandar. He began his professional career at fifteen, quickly rising through the European ranks as a prolific scorer, frequently netting 40 to 60 points in a game. Representing Yugoslavia, he earned a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympics and a silver in 1988, later winning silver for Croatia in the 1992 Games. Drafted by the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers in 1986, he opted to play in Europe for a few more years before joining the NBA in the 1989-1990 season, becoming one of the first Europeans in the league. After limited playing time in Portland, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets in 1991, where he emerged as a premier player, averaging over 20 points per game. His success inspired hope in war-torn Croatia. Tragically, after his best NBA season in 1993, Dražen died in a car accident in Germany just before his 29th birthday. His funeral drew thousands, and the Nets retired his number 3. Despite his short career, his passion and spirit continue to impact international basketball.
