Emeritní biskup oxfordský a anglikánský teolog Richard Harries (jehož Rowan Williams označil za „onu raritu, již představuje křesťanský veřejný intelektuál“) se ve své knize zaobírá otázkou, co přesně bychom měli rozumět pojmem „vstal z mrtvých“. Jde o návrat k pozemskému životu, duchovní přítomnost, morální odkaz nebo o fyzickou transformaci? Podává stručný nástin dokladů jednak o samotném zmrtvýchvstání, jednak o Ježíšových zjeveních učedníkům, jak je analyzuje moderní biblistika. Všímá si toho, jakou roli hraje při hodnocení těchto dokladů víra a zkoumá podoby Kristovy pokračující přítomnosti ve světě, k nimž patří vedle Písma a eucharistie také trpící láska a potřeby druhých. Snaží se postihnout důsledky, jež z víry v Kristovo i všeobecné vzkříšení vyplývají pro život ve světě bolesti a strádání. A v neposlední řadě polemizuje s cynismem některých ateistů, kteří v křesťanské zvěsti neodůvodněně spatřují pouhou útěšnou fikci. Oproti jiným publikacím, které se zabývají fenoménem zmrtvýchvstání a které má český čtenář k dispozici, je Harriesův ekumenicky otevřený a poctivě přemýšlivý text přístupný jak svým stylem, tak svým rozsahem.

Impulzem ke vzniku této knihy byly veřejné přednášky o historii křesťanství, které se konaly na Oxfordu během akademického roku 1999-2000, v rámci oslav konce druhého tisíciletí a s pohledem do třetího. Tyto přednášky měly poskytnout přehled o aktuálním stavu křesťanství a oslavit přelom tisíciletí. John Drury, děkan Christ Church, navrhl uspořádání těchto přednášek, které s nadšením podpořil Richard Harries, biskup z Oxfordu. Přednášející nebyli vázáni konkrétními instrukcemi, kromě toho, že měli upozornit na některé kreativní příspěvky daného období, které ovlivnily vývoj křesťanství, a to i pro neodborníky. Termín „tvořivý příspěvek“ neznamenal kritiku; křesťanská církev byla po většinu své historie ovlivněna vnější i vnitřní kritikou. Tato volná instrukce se ukázala jako náročná a každý přednášející ji interpretoval podle svých zájmů. Výsledná kniha představuje různorodé přístupy k jednotlivým obdobím, což je očekávatelné, když se účastní zkušení odborníci s rozvinutými intelektuálními osobnostmi. Kvalita a variabilita přístupů odráží jejich zkušenosti a znalosti.
