Hell's observations of the transit of Venus across the sun in 1769 were among the most accurate made at the time, and contributed greatly to our understanding of the solar system. This volume includes Hell's detailed notes and measurements from the event, along with commentary by modern astronomers.

V denníku zaznamenáva merania uskutočňované počas spomínanej polárnej expedície – určenie výšky svetového pólu a jednotlivých hviezd v rôznych severských destináciách, meranie magnetickej odchýlky, pozorovanie polárnych žiar, meteorologické pozorovania a vykonávanie časových korekcií. Predovšetkým sú však informácie v ňom unikátnym, doposiaľ v slovenčine nezverejneným dokladom jeho pozorovania prechodu Venuše popred slnečný disk 3. júna 1769 a pozorovania zatmenia Slnka v nasledujúci deň.
