While other Soviet cities embraced modernism in the 1960s, Moscow's mosaics were predominantly in art deco and socialist realist styles. These artworks can be found in metro stations, cultural palaces, military museums, hospitals, schools, and prefabricated houses. Unfortunately, many important mosaics are disappearing due to destruction or dismantling, with most lacking state protection and many artists remaining anonymous.
Organized chronologically, the book features four sections—art deco, socialist realism, modernism, and postmodernism—showcasing and describing 140 mosaics.
