Jeho předchozí líčení cest bylo vydáno pod názvem Dinotopie: Země odloučená od času a Dinotopie: Svět v hloubi. Dinotopie byla představena jako zapomenutý ostrov, na němž žijí dinosauři s lidmi v poklidném souznění.

Po dlhých rokoch hľadania výtvarník James Gurney objavil v antikvariáte zabudnutý cetopisný denník Arthura Denisona, vedca z 19. storočia. Predchádzajúce Denisonove cestovné záznamy vyšli pod názvami Dinotopia: Krajina mimo času, Dinotopia: Podzemný svet. Popisuje v nich zabudnutú ostrovnú krajinu, v ktorej ľudia a dinosaury žijú vo vzájomnom porozumení.
