Základní princip, fungující ve všech společnostech, představuje rozlišení mezi veřejným a soukromým. Vymezení těchto pojmů, sfér světa, se odráží v morálce, pojetí občanských ctností, ale také v názorech na ženy a jejich postavení ve společnosti. Autorka, americká politická filozofka, svoji knihu věnuje problematice ženy ve veřejném a soukromém světě. Vede nás od antiky až do současnosti. Na názorech jednotlivých myslitelů ukazuje, jak se v západním myšlení vyvíjel pohled na veřejné-soukromé a spolu s ním i přístup k ženám, jejichž postavení bylo většinou omezováno především na soukromou sféru - rodinu, domov. Je zastánkyní zachování napětí mezi veřejným a soukromým, které je zárukou, že veřejné zájmy nepohltí jednotlivce a ani občanské ctnosti nebudou nahrazeny soukromým asociálním potěšením. Zároveň nabádá k aktivnější účasti žen ve veřejném životě jakožto projevu spoluzodpovědnosti za budoucnost naší civilizace. První polovina knihy je věnována obecnější filozofické problematice veřejného a soukromého, druhá část se už soustřeďuje přímo na vztah ženy - politika.
