Tato práce význačného francouzského sociologa je věnována originální brazilské kulturní syntéze, v níž se prolínají vlivy africké, evropské a indiánské. Pozornost je zde zaměřena na rituály posedlosti inspirované západoafrickým kultem vudu, který do Jižní Ameriky přenesli černí otroci. Mezi odvlečenými Afričany byli velcí mistři domácího náboženství, díky nimž byly původní kulty na americké pevnině obnoveny v syntéze s křesťanstvím a animismem Indiánů kmene Cabocle.
