When Amos Tutuola's first novel, The Palm-Wine Drinkard, appeared in 1952, it aroused exceptional worldwide interest. Drawing on the West African Yoruba oral folktale tradition, Tutuola described the odyssey of a devoted palm-wine drinker through a nightmare of fantastic adventure. Since then, The Palm-Wine Drinkard has been translated into more than 15 languages and has come to be regarded as a masterwork of one of Africa's most influential writers. Tutuola's second novel, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, recounts the fate of mortals who stray into the world of ghosts, the heart of the tropical forest. Here, as every hunter and traveler knows, mortals venture at great peril, and it is here that a small boy is left alone.

Jedným z originálnych zjavov súčasnej africkej literatúry je Nigérijčan Amos Tutuola. Tvorba Amosa Tutuolu vychádza z ľudovej slovesnosti, najmä rozprávky. Autor svoje príbehy rozpráva na úrovni ľudového rozprávača, ibaže, na rozdiel od neho, ich zapisuje. Rozprávania desiatich večerov – Striga z džungle, čitateľa dozaista upútajú svojou exotickou témou – fantastickostrašidelnými rozprávkovými obrazmi mĺkvej džungle, strigy z džungle, ktorá náhodných votrelcov premieňa na sochy. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Amos Tutuola's second novel, was first published in 1954. It tells the tale of a small boy who wanders into the heart of a fantastical African forest, the dwelling place of innumerable wild, grotesque and terrifying beings. He is captured by ghosts, buried alive and wrapped up in spider webs, but after several years he marries and accepts his new existence. With the appearance of the television-handed ghostess, however, comes a possible route of escape.

"Ich trank Palmwein seit ich zehn Jahre alt war. Nichts anderes hatte ich im Leben zu tun, als Palmwein zu trinken." So stellt sich der Erzähler, der sich selbst "Vater-der-Götter-der-alles-in-dieser-Welt-tun-kann" nennt, vor.
