Stephen Pile ist ein Renaissance-Mensch, der in einer Vielzahl von Aktivitäten nicht besonders gut ist. Die Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain zeigt, dass die westliche Zivilisation von Erfolg besessen ist, obwohl die meisten von uns ein echtes Talent für das genaue Gegenteil haben. Vor drei Jahren beschloss Stephen Pile, etwas dagegen zu unternehmen: Er gründete den Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain. Um Mitglied zu werden, musste man in etwas nicht besonders gut und vorzugsweise regelrecht schlecht sein. Die Mitglieder berichteten über die Dinge, die sie am schlechtesten konnten oder überhaupt nicht konnten. Manchmal gaben sie Darbietungen und erhielten stehende Ovationen. Im Laufe der Jahre fanden schreckliche musikalische Abende, Kunstausstellungen und Ähnliches statt, bis die Mitgliederzahl von 20 auf 200 anwuchs. Das Buch enthält ein Antragsformular für die Mitgliedschaft.
