The Zwinger is a significant building complex with gardens in Dresden, designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser. This masterpiece of architecture, sculpture, and painting is among the most important Baroque structures and, alongside the Frauenkirche, is one of Dresden's most renowned monuments. The name "Zwinger" originates from the medieval term for a fortified area between the outer and inner walls of a fortress, although it did not serve any corresponding function during its initial construction.
