Die Spirale ist ein traditionelles Muster der keltischen Kunst. Sie ist charakterisiert durch gewundene Spiralschnörkel und Spiralranken mit mehrfacher Symmetrie. Der Autor zeichnet die historische Entwicklung dieses Motivs in der keltischen Kunst nach von den "einfachen" prähistorischen Spiralen (ca. 6000 v. Chr.) bis hin zu den ungemein dekorativen Spiralen des Goldenen Zeitalters (650-850 n. Chr.). Er führt in die Geschichte und künstlerische Entwicklung des Ornaments ein und zeigt in Beispielen, wie sie gezeichnet bzw. konstruiert werden können.
