Nach Tätigkeiten als Tierpfleger, Abwaschhelfer in der Antarktis, Innenarchitekt und Kunstlehrer wurde er 1998 hauptberuflicher Illustrator. David ist Absolvent des Christchurch College of Education und hat ein Diplom in Bildender Kunst von der University of Canterbury erworben.
