Wegen seiner Rivalen Danglars und Fernand gibt es kein ordentliches Verfahren und so wird Edmond Dantès 14 Jahre lang im Gefängnis Château d’If eingesperrt. Im Gefängnis wird ihm von Abbé Faria, ebenfalls ein Gefangener, anvertraut, dass er einen Schatz auf der Insel Monte Christo lagernd hat und vermacht ihm diesen auch. Als Faria stirbt, lässt sich Dantès als Faria’s Leiche ins Wasser werfen und reist nach Monte Christo. Mit dem Schatz begibt er sich anschließend nach Paris, wo er als der noble Graf von Monte Christo auftritt. Dort trifft er auch auf die Schuldigen für seine ungerechtfertigte Haftstrafe und lässt beide dafür büßen…
