La fama di Edgar Allan Poe è legata principalmente ai suoi celebri racconti, ma le sue poesie non sono di minor fascino e hanno assunto un preciso significato nella storia della lirica moderna. Una di esse, Il Corvo, ebbe tanto successo da procurare allo scrittore il nomignolo di «Mr. Raven» («signor Corvo», appunto). In essa compare il nero uccello simbolo dell’inquieto messaggio di Poe, sibillinamente gracchiando a tutte le domande la medesima risposta: «Mai più». Queste poesie, esaltate da Baudelaire e mirabilmente tradotte in prosa da Mallarmé, rappresentano un’anticipazione del simbolismo. Non eccedono però mai nel cerebrale, creando invece effetti di intensa emotività. Scriveva Emilio Cecchi che in Poe «logica e lirica, simbolo e senso, istinto e volontà… si organizzano in una sorta di nuova dimensione estetica, a prezzo di una tensione da lui sofferta fino all’isteria. Die älteren Schwestern, die das Reich erben, verstoßen Lear. Cordelia kehrt als Frau des Königs von Frankreich mit einer Armee zurück, um ihren Vater zu unterstützen, wird jedoch besiegt und stirbt schließlich. Lear, von Kummer überwältigt, stirbt ebenfalls. »König Lear« wird oft als Shakespeares größtes Werk bezeichnet, in dem seine Fähigkeiten am eindrucksvollsten zur Geltung kommen. Viele, die Shakespeare schätzen, würden sich wahrscheinlich dafür aussprechen, dieses Werk als einziges zu bewahren.
