"With this conference we wish to stress the confidence we have in you, the younger generation, and that future developments in Cypriote archaeology depend entirely upon your capabilities and endeavours." Mit diesen Worten wandte sich Vassos Karageorghis an die Teilnehmer eines Symposiums, das auf seine Initiative und mit Unterstützung der zyprischen Anastasios G. Leventis-Stiftung am 6. April 2002 in Berlin stattfand. Jungen deutschsprachigen Nachwuchswissenschaftlern im Bereich der zyprischen Archäologie bot diese Tagung die Möglichkeit zur Präsentation ihrer aktuellen Forschungen und zum wissenschaftlichen Diskurs. In diesem Band sind die Symposiumsbeiträge dieser jungen Wissenschaftler versammelt. Thematisch wird hier ein weites Spektrum der zyprischen Archäologie abgedeckt. Zentrale Denkmälergattungen wie z.B. die repräsentative, großformatige Terrakotta- oder Kalksteinplastik Zyperns sind ebenso Gegenstand der Beiträge wie die kleinformatige Plastik oder Grabreliefs. Darüber hinaus finden sich in diesem Band ebenso Untersuchungen zum hellenistischen Porträt, zu Bronzefibeln und zu Brennöfen. Ein weiter zeitlicher Bogen wurde dabei gespannt - von der späten Bronzezeit bis in die römische Kaiserzeit. In May 2013 a conference took place in Berlin organized by the Cypriot-German Cultural Association on the occasion of its 35th anniversary. The event – presented in close collaboration with the Collection of Classical Antiquities of the State Museums in Berlin (Antikensammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) – was prompted by the reorganization of the Neues Museum, which comprises a magnificent gallery of Cypriote antiquities. Most of the Cypriote objects kept in Berlin were published with short entries in the collection’s catalogue which appeared in English and in German in 2001 and 2002 respectively. The conference, however, provided a platform for a number of scholars to present their recent studies on some of the Cypriote objects of the Berlin Museums – objects ranging from the Late Bronze Age until the Hellenistic period, such as an exceptional vessel with animal protome, an elaborate bronze stand, vases of the Pictorial Style, finds from the ›Royal Cemetery‹ of Tamassos and the necropoleis of Marion and examples of funerary and votive sculpture made of limestone and terracotta. The book contains papers by Vassos Karageorghis, Gabriele Koiner, Viola Lewandowski, Hartmut Matthäus, Robert S. Merrillees, George Papasavvas, Elena Poyiadji-Richter, Sabine Rogge & Eftychia Zachariou-Kaila, Andreas Scholl and Reinhard Senff.
