As no appreciation of Agricola's stature among the founders of science can be gained without consideration of the advance which his works display over those of his predecessors, we therefore devote some attention to the state of knowledge Of these subjects at the time by giving in the Appendix a short review Of the literature then extant and a summary of Agricola's other writings. Kniha nádherným způsobem popisuje historii hlubinného dobývání nerostů a historii hutnictví. Byla považována za základní učebnici více než 200 let a ještě ve dvacátém století vyšlo její anglické, německé i české vydání. Georgii Agricolae tak založil tradici výchovy báňských odborníků. Opětovné vydání knihy Georgia Agricoly „De re metallica libri XII“ je důkazem trvalé aktuálnosti tohoto renesančního literárního díla, které je právem pokládáno za nejstarší komplexní učebnici báňských věd.

„De re metallica libri XII“. Od prvních příprav na toto dílo v Jáchymově po jeho dokončení uplynulo více jak 20 let. Práce na tomto díle ukončil až v roce 1550 a nepřízní osudu bylo vydáno až rok po jeho smrti v Basileji v roce 1556. Získalo si takový ohlas, že během příštích staletívyšlo ve 33 dalších vydáních a v 11 jazycích, mezi nimi v roce 1933 česky a v roce 1996 reprint tohoto díla v kožené vazbě. Agricolův přístup k tomuto dílu se projevil v dedikačním listu z 1. 12. 1550, jímž připisoval své dílo „De re metallica libri XII“ saským vládcům a o způsobu práce napsal „Nemohl jsem nic přinést a napsat, co jsem sám nevěděl, o čem bych se nebyl od hodnověrných mužů nedověděl“.
