The book is set in the fifties; it's about two lads on a holiday in Blackpool; unbeknownst to the other, one of them has mugged and robbed a shopkeeper just before leaving for Blackpool. The book is all in very short chapters, like the short takes of a B-movie.....In 1955, Stan Barstow wrote his first novel. It was a thriller, which went round a few publishers, collecting rejection letters. So he put it away in a drawer. In 1987, he took it out again, dusted it off, and - with nearly thirty years more experience - reworked it into B-Movie. So the B- in the title is also a bit of a pun...

Victor, mladý technik, sa zaľúbi do Ingridinej peknej tváričky, očarí ho jej ladná postava a „tie jej nohy!“ Prežívame s ním všetky muky pochybností, či ho bude chcieť, či sa aj on jej zapáči, či mu neodmietne schôdzku. Potom sledujeme, ako sa ich „láska“ rozvíja, rastie telesná príťažlivosť, cez pochybnosti, drobné intrigy, rozčarovanie a zase veľké zanietenie, až po osudový „chybný krok“. Kým si Victor uvedomí, že si s Ingrid nerozumie, lebo mu je duševne vzdialená, že nie je „tá pravá“ a jeho predstavy o celoživotnej družke sú iné, je už — ako to v živote tak často býva — neskoro. Pod nátlakom jej i svojej rodiny, ale aj zmyslu pre česť a povinnosť, ožení sa s ňou. A potom prídu — priskoro na ich mladosť — starosti a trápenia, na ktoré nie sú pripravení, prídu nezhody a zvady v spoločnom byte s testinou a všetko čo s tým súvisí. Obaja mladí tápu v svojich citoch, sú neraz zmätení, bezradní, sklamaní a duševne otrasení, utvárajú si charakter, vlastné názory, prehrýzajú sa zo sveta bezstarostnej, ľahkomyseľnej mladosti do sveta dospelých.

Vikovi je právě dvacet let a hrozně se mu líbí Ingrid Rothwellová. Je krásná, pořád jako ze škatulky, úplně jiná než holky, které znal jako kluk z hornické rodiny, prostě nedostižný idol. Zná ji jen od vidění z ranních cest do závodu, kde pracuje jako kreslič a Ingrid jako písařka. Avšak Vikovi se přece jen podaří tu hlubokou propast mezi nimi překlenout a znenadání začne něco jako láska... Jenomže prvotní okouzlení se brzy změní v trpké rozčarování a trvá dlouho, než se oba mladí lidé umoudří. Tento příběh lásky se odehrává na pozadí života nevelkého průmyslového města v severní Anglii a zpestřuje jej celá řada mistrovsky vystižených postav, kamarádů a rodičů Vika a Ingrid, vylíčených se smyslem pro humor.
