This lavishly illustrated book introduces the sun, its physics, and its impact on life here on Earth. Using the most recent results based on radio telescope and satellite observations, the author describes the sun's awesome nuclear energy processes, its mysterious neutrino flux, its seismic activity, its magnetic fields and sunspots, its corona, solar flares and prominences, the solar wind, and the hugely important and multifaceted role of sunlight in both sustaining and endangering life on Planet Earth. Written in a light and friendly style, this is a delightful book for all who wish to understand the latest discoveries about the sun. It would make an ideal gift for all students of astronomy and related disciplines as well as for amateur astronomers.

Die Kombination aus informativen Inhalten und visueller Attraktivität macht es zu einem idealen Begleiter für alle, die sich mit den Geheimnissen des Universums auseinandersetzen möchten.

      PLANETEN Wanderer im All
    • This book is designed for learning or teaching astrophysics and serves as a key reference for anyone interested in the subject. It introduces astrophysics from basic principles, requiring no prior knowledge of astronomy. The text is structured into lecture-sized chapters, guiding students through fundamental physical principles as they apply to the cosmos. Ideal for undergraduate students in physical sciences like astronomy, chemistry, engineering, or physics, it also appeals to any curious learner interested in celestial science. The mathematics involved is limited to simple algebra, sufficient for understanding core concepts. The breadth and depth of the material prepare students for more advanced specialized courses. Throughout the text, astronomical examples reinforce basic concepts and illustrate the application of relevant formulas. An appendix includes essential astronomical and physical constants, units, and fundamental equations. This book distinguishes itself by referencing seminal papers in the field and discussing recent applications and specialized literature, enriching the learning experience.

Focusing on planets and stars, this volume provides essential astrophysical data for both amateur astronomers and professionals. It includes physical parameters, celestial coordinates for observation, and conversion factors for various units. Special attention is given to the Earth and Moon, with updated atmospheric and orbital data from spacecraft missions. Additionally, it covers asteroids, comets, and a variety of stars, including the Sun and special categories like Wolf-Rayet and flare stars, making it a comprehensive resource for astronomical research.

A comprehensive account of solar astrophysics and how our perception and knowledge of this star have gradually changed as mankind has elucidated ever more of its mysteries. The emphasis here is on the last decade, which has seen three successful solar spacecraft missions: SOHO, Ulysses and Yohkoh. Together, these have confirmed many aspects of the solar standard model and provided new clues to the numerous open questions that remain. The author, a leading researcher in the field, writes in a clear and concise style. Known also for his famous books „Astrophysical Formulae“, „Sun, Earth and Sky“ and the prize-winning „Wanderers in Space“, he has succeeded once again in addressing a complex scientific topic in a very approachable way.

Kenneth Lang's classic work Astrophysical Formulae. (Vol. I and II) is now available as soft cover edition in a set. This volume is a reference source of fundamental formulae in physics and astrophysics. In contrast to most of the usual compendia it carefully explains the physical assumptions entering the formulae. All the important results of physical theories are covered: electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, general relativity, atomic and nuclear physics, and so on. Over 2100 formulae are included, and the original papers for the formulae are cited together with papers on modern applications in a bibliography of over 1900 entries. For the third edition (first published in 1999), a chapter on space, time, matter and cosmology had been included and the other chapters carefully revised.

      Astrophysical formulae
    • This is a definitive reference of 2,100 fundamental formulae used in astronomy and astrophysics. It not only makes accessible all the indispensable equations employed in the field, but also carefully explains the physical assumptions and constants underlying them. The bibliography contains more than 1,900 citations of original papers. Accounting for nearly 20 years since the previous edition, this volume is significantly revised and expanded.

      Astrophysical formulae 2
    • This classic reference for the fundamental formulae of physics and astrophysics has become part of nearly every astronomers and astrophysicists library. „A magnificent compendium“ - OPTICA ACTA (ON THE FIRST EDITION)
