An inspired book about the way in which residents have made water habitable through the use of boats, pontoons, and concrete hulls, creating a separate and sometimes secretive world within a city dominated by water. Historic ships, barges, individual designs, and schemes are documented and described, including plans for utilizing the space that water affords even more effectively in the future.

Crowel's work is level-headed and objective. His projects are organized into thematic areas: Living, Working, Shopping, Traveling, and the all-important Relaxing.
