Thunder in Your Throat n.b.k. Berlin Bd. 14

      n.b.k. Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, 2022

These Are the Only Times You Have Known' presents the work of 11 international artists who were awarded the Berlin Senate?s Visual Arts Grant. The range of artistic positions they represent re?ects the diversity of artistic forms of expression in Berlin and includes the examination of different layers of time, hidden narratives, and issues of belonging and performativity. The search for meaning in the present is an element shared by all of the artistic works presented, whose spectrum ranges from paintings, photographs, prints, and video installations to virtual reality techniques. The title These Are the Only Times You Have Known underscores the contemporaneity of the positions assembled in the exhibition, while at the same time pointing to the individual artistic achievements, each of which formulates questions about the present, past, and future in its own way. Exhibition: Neuer Berliner Kunstverein n.b.k., Berlin, Germany (0703. - 10.05.2020).

This dense script, which has been unearthed during the archival research for the exhibition of Neuen Berliner Kunstverein, assembled from a universal collection of materials, can now be presented to the public. VALIE EXPORT?s work was ahead of its time in its anticipation of the body?s emplacement in digital capitalism and the latter?s interactions with new media, artificial intelligence, and social media. One aspect of what makes The Virtual Body. From the Prosthetic to the Post-biological Body significant and worth studying is its insistence that, in the face of the symbolic instability of entertainment cinema, commercial TV, and digital broadcasting (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms) that cannot articulate more than their utter disconnect from reality, expanded cinema still has something important to say about the contemporary world.

The exhibition Mess with Your Values introduces eleven renown positions from the multi-faceted Berlin art scene and presents the wide range of practices they developed to investigate politicially as well as artistically relevant subjects. Change in society, the encounter and exchange of different social groups, the recognition and equality of all genders as well as forms of historiography are some of the issues that are explored within video artworks, installations, performances, paintings, prints and photographs. The insight into Berlin's artistic diversity presented in the exhibition includes works by Yalda Afsah, Lars Bjerre, Jeremiah Day, Annette Frick, Katrin Glanz, Nadira Husain, Wilhelm Klotzek, Andréas Lang, Annika Larsson, Zoë Claire Miller, and Katrin Winkler. In an expressive, subversive and humorous way, they question normative perspectives and use artistic means to deliberately create ruptures that can be experienced as spaces of opportunity.
