Die Arbeitsmigration in den Ländern des Mittelmeerraumes ist bisher kaum Gegenstand ethnologischer Forschung gewesen. Die Fallstudie eines sizilianischen Dorfes untersucht mit teilnehmender Beobachtung, direkter Befragung und Archivforschung die Auswirkungen von Emigration und Rückwanderung auf Politik, Geschlechterrollen und urbane Struktur. Als Beitrag zur Forschung zum Sozial- und Kulturwandel zeigt die Arbeit, daß nicht Rückwanderung allein, sondern das Zusammenspiel lokaler und überregionaler Faktoren für die Wandlungsprozesse verantwortlich ist.
