Ich habe schon einige Bücher im asiatischen Setting und typischen Mulan-Vibe gelesen, sodass ich an diesem nicht vorbei gehen konnte. Leider hat es mich jedoch nicht ganz abgeholt. Zetian ist wütend und will aus dem vorbestimmten Leben und Rollenbild ausbrechen. Das birgt für mich immer großes Potenzial, was in meinen Augen hier aber einfach nicht ausreichen ausgeschöpft wird. Stattdessen wurde mir die Prota nach und nach im Buch immer unsympathischer. Sie ist stur und unverbesserlich. Ja, auch mutig und badass, aber handelt mir viel zu oft wie ein bockiges Kind. Sie selbst wertet aber andere Frauen ab, die sich nicht so wie sie verhalten. Sie ist mir dabei stets zu unreflektiert gewesen und oft auch leicht von außen beeinflussbar gewesen, wenn man ihr gewissen Verhalten vor Augen geführt hat. Irgendwann hat sie für mich nur noch aus Rache bestanden, nichts anderes. Die anderen Charaktere hatten viel Potenzial und ich habe sie wirklich lieb gewonnen, aber auch hier ist viel auf der Strecke geblieben. Ich meine das Buch hat über 500 Seiten, aber es wurde kaum miteinander gesprochen. Was extrem viel Tiefe und Verbindung zwischen den drei Charakteren gekostet hat. Das Setting mochte ich sehr gern und es war mal etwas anderes als der typische Krieg zwischen verschiedenen Herrschern, aber auch hier hat mir in den Kampfszenen die deutliche Veranschaulichung gefehlt. Auch wenn ich viel Kritik äußere ist es dennoch ein gut lesbares Buch - aber eben mit einigen Schwächen.

Unusual story. Took me a moment to get into, but then I loved it. Great world building. And the end, wow.
