I was so looking forward to this book, but it was a very different horror story than I expected it to be: the blurb on the cover spoke about friendship and the horror mystery of the staircase in the woods. But it's very heavy on the family trauma of each person involved and less about the horror in the woods. The "friend" group was mostly bickering, accusing, judging, tricking and blaming each other throughout the story. The characters were unkind to one another and emotionally very immature (I often forgot they were adults since they came across as cliché teenagers), which made for an annoying reading experience for me. The writing itself felt too on-the-nose with superfluous explanations, as well as redundant repetitions and unnatural dialogues. All in all, it wasn't a book for me personally. I have seen many positive reviews as well, though. Tastes differ, after all, and we all go into a book with different experiences and expectations.
