Joan Sales (1912), advocat i militar de carrera, s'exilià el 1939 a França i posteriorment a Mèxic, on publicà «Quaderns de l'exili». Amic del poeta Màrius Torres, mantingué amb ell una correspondència de gran interès, Cartes a Màrius Torres (1952), i tingué cura de l'edició de la seva obra poètica. Sales ha publicat poesia, Viatge d'un moribund (1952), i ha estrenat la peça teatral En Tirant lo Blanc a Grècia (1958), que publicà posteriorment. S'ha lliurat, també, a diverses tasques editorials.L'obra de més audiència de l'autor és la seva única novel·la, Incerta glòria (1956), que marca una fita en la narrativa catalana de postguerra, i que ha anat ampliant amb els anys i en successives edicions. La novel·la ha esdevingut, finalment, una obra de gran extensió i complexitat, i és, en definitiva, l'obra de tota una vida. En aquest segon volum oferim la tercera part d'Incerta glòria i la que inicialment es titulava «Últimes notícies», i que a partir de la cinquena edició esdevingué El vent de la nit, amb una major independència de la resta de la novel·la, malgrat tenir com a protagonista un mateix personatge, enfrontat amb la derrota que representa el pas del temps.
