This volume publishes Yukio Lippit's lecture of the same title, held at the Getty Center on 23 September 2014.

This publication highlights the collection of Japanese secular painting at the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne, primarily acquired by founders Adolf and Frieda Fischer before 1913. Six distinguished specialists in Japanese art offer fresh insights into pre-modern Japanese visual culture in this beautifully illustrated catalogue. The work is divided into two main parts: the first explores the reception of Japanese art and the emergence of East Asian art history in Germany, while also examining the monk painter's role as a bridge between Chinese and Japanese secular art concepts. The catalogue section features 94 works organized into seven subject categories, including hand scrolls, fans, hanging scrolls, and folding screens, all reproduced in full color, with many scrolls displayed in their entirety. Each chapter begins with an introduction addressing key historiographical, aesthetic, and methodological issues relevant to current research in pre-modern Japanese visual culture. The detailed entries are complemented by comprehensive appendices, which include photographs of signatures, seals, and transcriptions of inscriptions found in the paintings.
