Je podezření, že klobouk může obsahovat důležité dokumenty, se kterými oběť vraha vydírala. Jen díky Elleryho skvělé a rozsáhlé dedukci na základě chybějícího klobouku se mu podaří vraha dopadnout.

První z nich se odehrává po 2. světové válce a hlavní hrdina Ellery Queen společně se svým otcem inspektorem řeší případ pokusu o vraždu zbrojařského magnáta, který si se svojí rodinou vybudoval samostatný stát na neznámém ostrově. Ve druhém příběhu, který se odehrává za 2. světové války, vystupuje Ellery sám. Když zabloudí v poušti, narazí zde na skrytou náboženskou komunitu, která žije již přes sto let v odloučení od světa. Ellery je přijat „učitelem“ jako předpovězený host a opět se zaplete do případu vraždy. Oba romány vycházejí v češtině poprvé, ale určitě nepatří k nejlepším dílům známé autorské dvojice.

Erle Stanley Gardner je jedním z nejproslulejších spisovatelů detektivní literatury.
