Hugos historischer Roman handelt vom Aufstand der Vendée des Jahres 1793 in Frankreich. Gekonnt erzählt der Meisterautor eine Geschichte zwischen Abenteuern eines Bataillons Regierungstruppen auf See, den Geschehnissen im revolutionären Paris und den blutigen Scharmützeln in der Vendée. Analog zu Sir Walter Scott mischt Hugo dabei geschichtliche Ereignisse mit einem Schuss Fiktion.
