On a imprimé, et on imprime encore de temps en temps à mon sujet des notices biographiques si pleines d’inexactitudes et d’erreurs, que l’idée m’est enfin venue d’écrire moi-même ce qui, dans ma vie laborieuse et agitée, me paraît susceptible de quelque intérêt pour les amis de l’art. Le public s’inquiète peu, je n’en saurais douter, de ce que je puis avoir fait, senti ou pensé. Mais un petit nombre d’artistes et d’amateurs de musique s’étant montrés pourtant curieux de le savoir, encore vaut-il mieux leur dire le vrai que de leur laisser croire le faux.Je n’ai pas la moindre velléité non plus de me présenter devant Dieu mon livre à la main en me déclarant le meilleur des hommes, ni d’écrire des confessions. Je ne dirai que ce qu’il me plaira de dire ; et si le lecteur me refuse son absolution, il faudra qu’il soit d’une sévérité peu orthodoxe, car je n’avouerai que les péchés véniels.
