Doch um seine Kaution vom Reisebüro zurückzuerhalten, benötigt er Beweise. Darum bittet er den Premier um eine kurze Notiz ('handschriftlich reicht völlig aus') mit der geforderten Bestätigung. Außerdem lernt er Marigold, die leidenschaftlich gerne Puppenhäuser baut, und deren zu 100 Prozent organisch-selbstgestrickte Eltern kennen. Dann lernt er auch noch Marigolds Schwester kennen, die im Gegensatz zu ihr ganz und gar nicht verklemmt und altjüngferlich ist. Auch sonst läuft erwartungsgemäß alles nicht so ganz rund in Adrians Leben: Die neueste Schrulle seiner Eltern ist es, alte Häuser zu renovieren, seine Schwester ist immer noch mit ihrem drogensüchtigen Freund zusammen, und Adrian selbst versucht sich mit weniger als mäßigem Erfolg in der Schriftstellerei.

Ein Fest für alle Adrian-Mole-Fans Was wird das neue Jahrtausend für Adrian Mole bereithalten? Zunächst einmal eine Menge Probleme. Was sich für die Queen wie ein Albtraum anhört, wird in ihrer neuen Bleibe schnell zur Realität. Doch Queen Elizabeth wäre nicht sie selber, wenn sie nicht auch in dieser Situation einen kühlen Kopf behalten und das Beste aus der Situation machen würde. Prinz Charles scheint nicht gar so unglücklich über den Sturz der Monarchie zu sein, wie Prinzessin Diana oder Prinz Philip.

Ob Schneckenspuren im Wohnzimmer, geheimnisvolle Kittelschürzen, panische Weihnachtseinkäufe oder die traumatische Angst vorm Friseur - hier wird endlich einmal thematisiert, was schon längst gesagt werden musste - und ohne Sue Townsend wohl niemals so geistreich und witzig gesagt worden wäre!
