Cardano (1501 - 1576) war Arzt, Astrologe, Mathematiker und Naturphilosoph und einer der letzten großen Universalgelehrten der Renaissance. Er hat sich intensiv mit Astrologie beschäftigt und unter den von ihm gedruckten Werken findet sich auch eine Reihe astrologischer Bücher. Auf ihn geht z. B. die astrologische Deutung der Stirnlinien zurück. Diese Autobiografie gibt einen tiefen Einblick in das Leben und Wirken dieses großen Astrologen.
Diese Autobiografie ist das einzige von Cardanos Werken, das auf Deutsch vorliegt. Der Originaltitel lautete "De Vita Propria" (wörtl.: "Vom anderen Leben"). Die deutsche Ausgabe, 1914 übersetzt und herausgegeben von Hermann Hefele, trägt den Titel "Des Girolamo Cardano von Mailand (Bürgers von Bologna) eigene Lebensbeschreibung" und bildet die nur minimal veränderte Grundlage der vorliegenden Ausgabe. Der Titel "Leben des Girolamo Cardano von ihm selbst geschrieben" wurde gewählt in Anlehnung an die andere große Autobiografie der Renaissance, das von Goethe übersetzte "Leben des Benvenuto Cellini von ihm selbst geschrieben". Cardanos Autobiografie unterscheidet sich von den meisten anderen Biografien, der chronologische Teil ist nur sehr kurz, der Hauptteil ist thematisch gegliedert, es geht um Gesundheit, Aussehen, Feindschaften, um seine Erfindungen, seine Fehler, Mängel und Schwächen, um Schicksalsschläge und Erfolge. Cardano ist konsequent subjektiv und schonungslos offen. Hier zieht ein großer Naturphilosoph aus dem Geiste der Renaissance das Resümee seines Lebens.
