The freshwater algal flora of Cuba is largely unexplored, making this work the first comprehensive floristic and taxonomic study of the Chlorococcales group. It focuses on various freshwater biotopes across Cuba, particularly in the western provinces and the Isle of Pines. The book offers identification keys for the taxa, along with concise botanical descriptions highlighting key morphological features. It also discusses ecology and distribution, supplemented by original illustrations. Special sections delve into the biology, systematics, and taxonomy of Chlorococcales, as well as the characterization of Cuba's main aquatic biotopes. The geographic distribution section explores the floristic relationships between Cuban algae and those in other regions, referencing previous studies and more recent data. Notably, 60% of Cuban freshwater Chlorococcales taxa are cosmopolitan, with 47% morphologically identical to those in other areas and 13% showing distinct features in Cuban populations. Additionally, 20% are pantropical taxa, with some unique to tropical America, while another 20% are endemic to Cuba. The study identifies 211 Chlorococcales taxa in Cuban freshwaters, predominantly in eutrophic bodies, with Scenedesmaceae being the most represented family, particularly the genus Scenedesmus. The most abundant species include Monoraphidium contortum, Coelastrum indicum, and Pediastrum tetras.
