China’s economic transformation over the past 30 years has led to rapid urbanization and significant internal migration, with over 230 million migrant workers, primarily temporary migrants lacking the same rights and social benefits as permanent residents. Most retain connections to their villages of origin. This book presents findings from an explorative research project conducted in 2010 across four rural–urban migration corridors in China. Utilizing the concept of multi-locality, the researchers examined the informal connections between migrants’ home villages and megacities, focusing on household perspectives and addressing both economic and non-economic livelihood opportunities, such as education, healthcare, and elder care. The study also explored informal support networks among multi-locational households, based on family, kin, or dialect ties. Alongside the analysis, the book includes transcribed interviews with migrant workers and their families, translated into English. These narratives provide insight into the migrants’ experiences and perspectives, illustrating their lives between city and countryside. The research highlights the complexities of migration and the multifaceted nature of livelihood strategies in the context of China’s ongoing urban transformation.
