Inferno ist ein Roman, der Dan Browns Stärken ebenso offenlegt wie seine Schwächen und genau deshalb polarisiert. Inhaltlich knüpft Brown nahtlos an das bewährte Muster an: Robert Langdon wird kopfüber in eine globale Bedrohung geworfen, Rätsel, Codes und historische Verweise treiben die Handlung im Minutentakt voran. Diesmal steht Dante Alighieris Göttliche Komödie im Zentrum, genauer gesagt die düstere Vision der Hölle, ein kluger thematischer Zugriff, der dem Roman eine ungewohnt finstere Grundstimmung verleiht. Besonders gelungen ist die Anfangsphase. Browns Tempo ist hoch, die Szenen wechseln rasch, Florenz wird atmosphärisch dicht gezeichnet. Die Verbindung aus Kunstgeschichte, Symbolik und moderner Wissenschaft funktioniert erneut erstaunlich gut. Gleichzeitig bleiben die bekannten Kritikpunkte nicht aus. Figuren wirken oft funktional, Dialoge mitunter hölzern, und die ständige Erklärung komplexer Sachverhalte kann belehrend wirken. Wer Dan Brown kennt, wird kaum überrascht: Wendungen sind kalkuliert, die Dramaturgie folgt einem erkennbaren Schema. Unterm Strich ist Inferno kein literarisches Meisterwerk, aber ein extrem effizienter Spannungsroman. Wer intelligente Unterhaltung, kulturelle Rätsel und ein hohes Erzähltempo schätzt, bekommt genau das, was er erwartet.
