Feuer und Stein ist ein Roman, der sich bewusst Zeit nimmt und genau das muss man mögen. Diana Gabaldon kombiniert historische Details, Zeitreise, Abenteuer und eine große Liebesgeschichte zu einem erstaunlich dichten Epos, das sich nicht in eine Schublade pressen lässt. Im Mittelpunkt steht Claire Randall, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg plötzlich im Schottland des 18. Jahrhunderts landet. Was schnell auffällt: Gabaldon nimmt ihre historische Welt ernst. Das damalige Leben, politische Spannungen, Medizin, Aberglaube all das wirkt gut recherchiert und glaubwürdig eingebettet. Schottland ist dabei nicht bloße Kulisse, sondern fast eine eigene Figur. Die große Stärke des Romans liegt in den Figuren und ihren Beziehungen. Claire ist keine passive Heldin, sondern klug, widerspenstig und manchmal herrlich ungeduldig. Die Beziehung zu Jamie entwickelt sich langsam, mit Reibung, Unsicherheiten und echter Nähe. Das fühlt sich organisch an und nicht wie eine romantische Pflichtübung. Allerdings: Feuer und Stein ist kein schnelles Buch. Gabaldon liebt Abschweifungen, Details und lange Dialoge. Manches hätte straffer erzählt werden können, gerade im Mittelteil. Wer hier durchhalten kann, wird jedoch belohnt, denn die emotionale Wucht wächst stetig. Am Ende ist Feuer und Stein ein atmosphärischer Auftakt, der Herz, Abenteuerlust und Geschichtsliebe verbindet.
