Fred Pohl, a celebrated science-fiction author, delivers an exhilarating chase-intrigue narrative set in the energy-scarce 2020s. The story follows Reverend Hornswell Hake, who leads a mundane life filled with power shortages and pastoral duties, including counseling the lively Alys Brant and her unconventional family. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he is reluctantly recruited as an agent for the Team, a secret organization that has risen from the ashes of the discredited CIA. Almost immediately, he finds himself embroiled in a mission related to the ongoing Cool War, a global campaign of sabotage that has replaced traditional warfare. As Horny and Alys navigate Europe, they encounter a host of eccentric characters, including Leota, the alluring leader of an anti-Team underground; Yosper, a foul-mouthed, Bible-thumping assassin; the troublesome Reddi twins, who appear at the worst moments; and Pegleg, a master of deadly gadgets. This fast-paced and picaresque tale offers not only humor and irony but also a thought-provoking glimpse into a possible future, making it a compelling read for fans of speculative fiction.
