In The Stigma of Einstein, Consciousness and Critical Education , we muse over ways in which to be, to become and to recognize uniqueness and different paths to genius. Understanding there is no prescribed procedure, we determine multiple actions, means and measures with which we recognize and teach to genius, we look at Einstein’s life and knowledges to connect our pedagogies and students. Today’s schools often exemplify an inability to stimulate and encourage students to find passion, goals and reasons to be educated. Many public school students do not succeed, they are disengaged, discouraged, and failing. Teachers are exhausted and overworked and lack respect and administrative support in districts controlled by local and national politics. Using Einstein as an example, but also a metaphor for educators, The Stigma of Genius is straight talk about the needs for schools/teachers/administrators/students to become critically and contextually aware. We argue for an education which is conscious of students’ needs and the nuances within each school and each classroom. Discussing cognition, classes, urban education and diversity, we have attempted to circle back to Einstein and understand ways to support and encourage today’s geniuses.

Twenty years after the publication of Howard Gardner's Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Joe L. Kincheloe and the contributing authors of Multiple Intelligences Reconsidered critique and rethink the theory in new frames of reference. Initially drawn to multiple intelligences (MI) theory because of its self-proclaimed challenge to the psychology establishment, the authors delineate their disillusionment with its evolution over the last two decades. The critiques provided here open exciting new doors to innovation in educational psychology and pedagogy, and move the fields in the direction initially promised by MI theory. Each intelligence presented by Gardner is examined and critiqued, while larger concepts in the theory are identified and assessed.

The Critical Constructivism Primer introduces education students to the study of knowledge; how it is inscribed by particular values and produced in problematic ways; whose interests it serves; and how it shapes the identities of those who consume it. Critical constructivism is an epistemological position that examines the process by which knowledge is socially constructed. Joe L. Kincheloe takes readers through the basic concepts and alerts them to the dangers of objectivism, reductionism, and the pathological views of self and world that emerge if students and educators are unaware of the construction of knowledge by dominant power interests. The book is essential reading for individuals who want to become researchers and educators.

This book examines the maligned students who populate urban schools and finds a talented group of resilient young people who deserve the support of the larger society. The editors and authors explore the ways such students are undermined, in the process developing new ways of teaching based on an understanding and appreciation of them. Contemporary political leaders have used the fear of the poor, non-white, and immigrant «city kids» we study here to push racist and class-biased social and educational agendas. This book challenges these tactics, while laying out a pedagogy of respect and hope.

      Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy
    • In this volume, Joe L. Kincheloe and Randall Hewitt have gathered an impressive and scholarly group of authors who argue for the continuing importance of the philosophy of education. Reviving the notion that philosophy is an essential foundation in the study and research of education, contributors to this volume directly confront the evisceration of the topic by those who are interested in commercializing learning. Contrary to the current shift away from foundations courses, this volume proves that pre-service teachers need an intense awareness of the subjects that comprise the core of their knowledge. Philosophy of education is central to this concept. Regenerating the Philosophy of Education is an excellent classroom resource, and is essential reading for all undergraduate and graduate students in schools of education.
