Highlighting Mayer's formal interest in draping, knotting and tethering, Ways of Attaching focuses on the artist's process of constructing real and imagined networks and constellations, in which friends and historical figures feature in expressions of affinity and attachment. It additionally features facsimile reproductions of Mayer's writings and newly commissioned essays reflecting on her work and the influences of astronomy, feminism, the art scene in New York in the 1960s and '70s, poetry, religion and Renaissance painting.

Das Buch entfaltet einerseits Grundprobleme des heute aktuellen Themas des Alterns anhand philosophiehistorischer Stationen, andererseits vertieft es die in ihnen präsenten ethisch-praktischen Fragen. In antiken Texten treten zwei unterschiedliche Sichtweisen zu Tage, die auch gegenwärtige Altersbilder noch prägen. Das Alter wird ambivalent erfahren, sowohl als Verfallsprozess und folglich als Negation des Strebens nach Glück, als auch als Abschlussphase, die sinnvoll in ein Konzept gelingenden Lebens integriert werden muss. Von hier gehen zwei Fluchtlinien aus, die pessimistische Altersbilder ebenso durchziehen wie zuversichtliche Prognosen über lebenslanges Lernen. Dem Begriff der Verantwortung kommt insofern besondere Bedeutung zu, als das historisch neue Phänomen der weitgehend gesicherten und erweiterten Lebenszeit eine allen Aspekten individuellen wie demographischen Alterns gerecht werdende Gestaltung notwendig macht.
