What can an abstract image be? Starting with this question, Clara Brörmann (*1982) develops paintings in different formats?canvas as landscape, as symbol, as figure. Her works are not two-dimensional, but have a body and can be viewed from various perspectives. The catalogue Kopfbilder begins with her relatively recent series of head paintings. Brörmann?s painting is characterized by her processual work method anda vivid materiality.
Optik Schröder II presents a representative selection from the collection of Alexander Schröder. This includes important works by Kai Althoff, Tom Burr, Bernadette Corporation, Claire Fontaine, Gelitin, Isa Genzken, Anne Imhof, Sergej Jensen, Pierre Klossowski, Manfred Pernice, Martha Rosler, and Reena Spaulings, and is one of the most important German private collections of contemporary art. These works illustrate some of the key conceptual trends and positions in the development of Western art in the past three decades, including references to social issues, queer lifestyles, the critique of institutions and the economy, critical investigation of public spaces and architecture, poetry, and contemporary forms of critical painting. The prominently represented artists’ collectives exemplify endeavors to challenge and transform the traditional roles and systems of the artist, of art production, and of the sale of art. This comprehensive overview shows a collection built up consistently since the mid-1990s and based on close proximity to the artists and sensitivity for new developments.
Robert Seidel (geb. 1983 in Grimma, lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig) macht die Stadt klein. Miniaturen von Straßenzügen ziehen sich über die Leinwand, einzelne Häuser fallen heraus, klappen in die Zweidimensionalität und stehen da wie Piktogramme. Fragmente aus Popkultur und Heimatkunde arrangiert er zu einer neuen Ordnung. Genauso verfährt er mit der menschlichen Figur, doch – obwohl auf einfache, kubische Formen reduziert – gelingen ihm prototypische Porträts. Im gleichen Maße, wie die Konstruktion von Häusern, Menschen und Landschaften perfekt erscheint, gestalten sich seine malerischen Oberflächen unvollkommen: Die Farbe wirkt gealtert, manchmal wie abgeblättert. So begegnen sich in Seidels Bildern Präzision und Witterung, Gegenwart und ein starkes Bewusstsein für die Zeit, deren Verstreichen die Produktion von Bildern immer unterliegt. Seidel, bis 2011 Meisterschüler bei Neo Rauch an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, legt mit „Frachter“ seine erste Monografie vor. German sculptor Georg Herold is known for his supersized sculptures of women's bodies composed of fabrics stretched over the crude wooden slats that are one of his signature materials. The other is caviar--the tiny eggs meticulously arranged into portraits--of pop culture heroes like Lionel Ritchie, Sean Penn, William Burroughs, Bertrand Russell, Mark Lombardi and others.
