Wir schreiben das Jahr 1794. Bleich um die Nase herum und sichtlich seekrank meldet sich ein jünger Fähnrich namens Horatio Hornblower an Bord des englischen Kriegsschiffs Justinian zum Dienst. Nicht, aber auch gar nichts gibt zunächst Anlaß, in dem siebzehnjährigen Schlaks einen künftigen Seehelfen zu vermuten. Aber Hornblower erweist sich als ebenso strebsam wie aufgeweckt, Besteckaufgabe bei der Navigation bilden kein Problem für ihn, und wenn es sein muß, schreckt er auch vor einem Duell auf Leben und Tod nicht zurück. Relativ rasch erfolgt seine Versetzung auf die Fregatte Indefatigable, und er erhält mehrfach die Gelegenheit, sich zu bewähren. Etwa als es gilt, mit nur vier Mann, die seinem Befehl unterstellt werden, eine gekaperte, schwer beschädigte französische Brigg als Prise in einen englischen Hafen zu bringen. Oder tollkühn an der Spitze eines Enterkommandos, das in der Nähe der Girondemündung eine gegnerische Korvette erstürmt. Mittlerweile ist auch Spanien auf Napoleons Seite in den Krieg eingetreten. Vor Cadiz vermag sich Hornblower bei der Erbeutung einer Galeere erneut auszuzeichnen, doch dann bestimmt das Schicksal ihm das entsetzliche Los, in spanische Kriegsgefangenschaft zu geraten ...
