A Charter for the City and the Earth

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) In recognition of the dire threats of climate collapse and mass extinction, the global initiative Bauhaus Earth convened a team of scientists, architects, spatial planners, and policy makers from around the world to author a manifesto. Toward Re-Entanglement is a call for radical action. It challenges all those with a role in the conception, production, operation, and governance of the building sector, to address the systemic ecological, climatic, and social impacts incurred by its activities. Twelve principles of re-entanglement guide the re-design of the entire life cycle of the urban the re-formation and re-materialization of the physical artifacts that comprise it, the reconfiguration of the socioeconomic structures that underpin it, and the re-engagement of the bioregions that might sustainably supply it. In this way, our unprecedented convergence of environmental and social crises offers us powerful opportunities for systemic change. Lead Philipp Misselwitz, Alan Organschi

      Cities as Carbon Sinks

The built environment significantly impacts climate change, accounting for around 40% of global emissions from construction, operation, and demolition. The 21st century must focus on re-entanglement, where essential functions like housing, work, and culture are integrated within urban spaces, fostering a supportive network of socioeconomic and ecological systems. This vision sees time as an interconnected flow, blending past, present, and future. There are opportunities to transform the built environment from a carbon source to a carbon sink through innovative approaches such as timber high-rises, circular bioeconomy practices, AI-assisted design, smart recycling, multifunctional land use, and community-driven urban development. This volume presents papers from a conference held at the Vatican in June 2022, featuring contributions from leading scientists, architects, planners, activists, and policymakers. It marks the first publication of the Bauhaus Earth think tank, showcasing ideas to reshape the Anthropocene. Notable contributors include Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Ursula von der Leyen, and Shigeru Ban, among others. The goal is to reconnect our cities with nature's ingenuity and strengthen partnerships across organizations like Built by Nature and Bauhaus Earth.
