This volume explores language policies and practices related to the linguistic standards used across various media. It includes research on ten language areas, aiming to enhance understanding of these policies in both original and translated media within pluricentric language contexts. Sociolinguists examine language use in diverse spoken, written, and audiovisual formats, alongside attitudes toward language and the media's influence on language change. The media studied range from professionally produced content, like news broadcasts and dubbed films, to user-generated content such as video blogs and social media posts. Media creators may follow linguistic guidelines or established practices, sometimes unconsciously, while also challenging them. In pluricentric areas, decisions about which language variety to use often reflect the target audience, with attempts to employ a "neutral variety" to appeal broadly. However, this approach faces challenges from glocalisation and demands for greater linguistic diversity. The Age of Streaming has further expanded options, allowing for multiple language versions on demand, such as Dutch-language audiobooks available in both Belgian and Netherlands Dutch versions, as well as children's audiovisual fiction dubbed in both varieties on streaming platforms.
