Tobias Nicklas hat über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg umfassend zu diesem Text geforscht und beleuchtet intertextuelle Aspekte, die Bildwelt und Theologie sowie die komplexe Rezeptionsgeschichte. Der vorliegende Band vereint seine Studien, die zuvor in unterschiedlichen und teilweise schwer zugänglichen Kontexten veröffentlicht wurden, und bietet einen aktualisierten Gesamtüberblick über die vielfältigen Auslegungsfragen der Johannesapokalypse.

Es gilt mittlerweile als akademische Binsenweisheit, dass Grenzziehungen, die das Eigene vom Anderen abgrenzen, einen zentralen Faktor religiöser Identitätskonstruktionen bilden. In diesem Zusammenhang wird allerdings kaum über die Bedeutung von Grenzüberschreitungen reflektiert, obwohl zahlreiche jüngere Publikationen zum frühen und spätantiken Christentum den Fokus auf Phänomene der Transgressivität legen. Dieser Sammelband verbindet nun beide Diskurse (zu religiöser Identität und zu Transgressivität) verbinden, indem er anhand zahlreicher Beispiele der Frage nachgeht: Welche Rolle haben in den ersten Jahrhunderten Grenzüberschreitungen für die religiöse Identitätsbildung gespielt? Sind Grenzüberschreitungen für religiöse Identitäten genauso wichtig wie Grenzziehungen? Bibliker und Kirchenhistoriker suchen anhand zahlreicher Beispiele Antworten auf diese Frage. Der Gottesdienst wird als wichtigster Raum der Bibelrezeption in interdisziplinärer Breite erschlossen; auf Basis grundlegender methodischer Reflexionen und innovativer Zugänge kommt die Vielfalt liturgischer Gattungen ebenso zur Sprache wie die Breite der verschiedenen Riten der Christenheit in Ost und West. Die Bedeutung der Heiligen Schrift geht dabei weit über deren Lesung hinaus: auch Gebete und Gesänge sind von der Bibel geprägt; biblische Texte haben Rituale inspiriert. Der vorliegende Sammelband steht im Kontext des interdisziplinären Großprojekts "Novum Testamentum Patristicum". Er bündelt die methodischen Perspektiven von Bibel- und Liturgiewissenschaft, Patrologie und Musikwissenschaft ebenso wie innovative Zugänge zu Kodikologie und materialer Kultur. Er geht der Verwendung der Bibel in der Vielfalt liturgischer Gattungen nach und reflektiert ihre hermeneutischen Voraussetzungen; dabei berücksichtigt er die ökumenische und sprachliche Breite der verschiedenen Riten der Christenheit in Ost und West in der formativen Phase des ersten Jahrtausends: von Äthiopien bis Spanien, von Syrien über Byzanz und Rom bis nach Gallien.

Inmitten der Herausforderungen der Corona-Pandemie und der ökologischen Krise bietet das Buch ermutigende und provokante biblische Impulse. Es beleuchtet, wie Glaubensfragen und biblische Perspektiven in der heutigen Zeit relevant bleiben und zur Reflexion über unsere Beziehung zur Natur anregen. Die Autor*innen laden dazu ein, die Verklärung der Natur kritisch zu hinterfragen und neue Wege des Glaubens und Handelns zu erkunden, die sowohl spirituelle als auch ökologische Dimensionen berücksichtigen.

Anyone who wishes to manage their sources adequately must work with categories that help to bring order to the transcribed material. In many cases, such categories simultaneously shape the way in which we evaluate our sources. Critical reflection of the chosen categories is therefore crucial for robust historical study. This rings especially true when certain categories are not viewed through neutral eyes, but through polemically judgemental eyes. One extreme case would be the category of “apocryphalness”. In some areas, associations like “fraudulent” versus and “secret” – interlinked to this term in Antiquity – are still shaping the way Christian apocrypha are considered to this day. Closely associated with this is the use of the adjectival categories like “(proto)-orthodox”, “majority church” versus those like “heretical” (again polemically pejorative). In their chapters, the contributors demonstrate not only how the set limits – as referred to the categories above – do indeed play a role, but more importantly, where these limits have been exceeded and where we must therefore work with new and different categories to understand the meaning of “apocryphal” writings and/or writings that have “become apocryphal” in terms of the history of an ancient Christianity perceived as multi-dimensional and dynamic. The following questions play a significant role in our understanding of this: In which contexts and by which groups are “newly apocryphal” writings used? Where do apocryphal writings or those “newly apocryphal” play a contextual role that would, nowadays, be perceived as “orthodox“? Which functions are assign thereto?

When exactly did the Parting of the Ways between Jews and Christians take place? Was it already Jesus who separated himself and his followers from the Jews ? Or did Paul with his mission of pagans make the decisive step? Or do we have to wait longer until after 70 CE, when the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed? In his new book, which goes back to the 2013 Deichmann lectures at Ben Gurion University, Beersheva, Tobias Nicklas shows that the above question is formulated inadequately. Instead, one has to distinguish between the situations of different groups (and even individuals) in different historical circumstances. To show this, Nicklas discusses images of Jews in early Christian writings, concepts of Israel's God and his Covenant with Israel, Christological and Ecclesiological hermeneutics of the Scriptures, and matters of Halakha for believers in Christ.

Reports of the miraculous abound in early Christian literature, in early Jewish texts and in the works of various Greco-Roman authors. In this collection of essays, largely the product of a symposium held at the University of Regensburg in June 2011, scholars specializing in a wide range of areas involving the ancient Mediterranean explore the representation of miracles in ancient literature. The central questions addressed include the following: How do ancient authors express their attitude toward the miracles they report? What value do they place in miraculous accounts? Which literary techniques do authors use to indicate whether or not they take a particular miraculous occurrence as true? How do they qualify, cast doubt on, or deny the validity of a report? Against this backdrop, a further question comes to the fore: What are the relationships between the multiple literary genres and religious contexts within which miraculous stories are told? These questions are raised and variously answered in essays treating the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, rabbinic sources, Christian apocrypha, martyrdom stories, and the works of Greek and Roman authors, including Galen and Lucian of Samosata. The contribution of this volume lies in the juxtaposition of various perspectives: Jewish, Christian and pagan authors are all brought into play; texts in which accounts of miracles are narrated are discussed alongside texts in which authors reflect on such accounts - either positively or negatively.

While the so-called ”New perspective in Paul“ has been in the focus of New Testament exegesis for more than 25 years now, ancient interpretations of Pauline texts and ideas have been neglected widely. The present volume aims to fill this gap. Its articles concentrate on three different foci of modern exegesis: interpretations of Paul’s conversion, his ideas about the relation of “grace” and “works” and the fate of Israel. Several additional articles contrast these ancient perspectives with answers of modern exegesis.

As environmental destruction begins to seriously affect humans, it has become increasingly relevant to reflect on the essential elements of the Jewish and Christian theologies of creation. The essays in this volume explore key aspects of creation theology, which poses the question of the origin of the world and of man. Creation theology is rooted in the concept of man who owes his existence to God and who is placed in a cosmos which God created as “good”. At the same time, the essays show that even back in antiquity, the creation discussion held high potential for ideological criticism.
