Názov Sedmohradsko nesie v súčasnosti jedna z troch veľkých historických provincií (Sedmohradsko, Valašsko a Moldavsko) tvoriacich Rumunsko, najväčšiu krajinu v juhovýchodnej Európe (s rozlohou približne 240000 km²), ktorá je domovom majoritného rumunského národa. Geografický význam názvu Sedmohradska sa časom menil. V stredoveku (12.16. stor.) sa vzťahoval len na konkrétny región vnútri karpatského oblúka s rozlohou vyše 50 000 km², ktorý bol v tom čase samostatným vojvodstvom v rámci Uhorského kráľovstva. Neskôr, po vzniku Sedmohradského kniežatstva, sa označenie rozšírilo aj na ostatné provincie na západe. V súčasnosti sa názov Sedmohradsko používa v širokom význame, to znamená, že ľudia ním bežne označujú celé severozápadné Rumunsko, ktoré tvorí vlastné (vnútrokarpatské) Sedmohradsko, Banát, Krišana a Marmaroš.
