      Kant übernimmt in diesem 1793 erstmals erschienen, seinerzeit höchst umstrittenen Spätwerk nichts weniger als den Versuch, nachzuweisen, dass in der christlichen Religion Teile einer moralisch-praktischen Vernunftreligion zu erkennen sind. In seiner Vorrede fasst er zusammen: »Moral also führt unumgänglich zur Religion, wodurch sie sich zur Idee eines machthabenden moralischen Gesetzgebers außer dem Menschen erweitert, in dessen Willen dasjenige Endzweck (der Weltschöpfung) ist, was zugleich der Endzweck des Menschen sein kann und soll.«
