The smithy eventually became the St.Nicholas Works producing equipment renowned for their workmanship.

It was his grandson, also Richard Garrett, who commenced manufacture of steam engines from 1830. It has diversified amongst others into electric vehicles, refuse vehicles, Army vehicles & agricultural machinery.
