Focusing on the unique development of Megara Hyblaia and Selinous, this work utilizes archaeological findings alongside limited literary sources to explore Greek settlements in archaic Italy. It examines the environmental and political contexts upon the Greeks' arrival, detailing the settlements' territorial expansion, societal structures, and economic conditions. The author emphasizes the distinctiveness of these settlements, arguing against the notion that they were mere replicas of mainland Greek city-states, highlighting their individual circumstances in Sicily.

Ancient Greek migrants in Sicily produced societies and economies that paralleled and differed from their homeland. Since the nineteenth century explanations for this have been heavily debated. This book is the first to gather the historical and archaeological evidence and to deploy it to test the various historical models proposed.
