John Wycliffe

    John Wycliffe war ein englischer scholastischer Philosoph, Theologe und Reformator, der an der Universität Oxford lehrte. Er trat im 14. Jahrhundert als einflussreicher Kritiker der römisch-katholischen Kirche hervor. Seine Anhänger, die Lollarden, predigten antiklerikale und bibelzentrierte Reformen und machten die Bewegung zu einem Vorläufer der protestantischen Reformation. Wycliffe, der als Morgenstern der Reformation bezeichnet wird, war ein früher Gegner der päpstlichen Autorität über die weltliche Macht. Er setzte sich auch maßgeblich für die Übersetzung der Bibel in die Volkssprache ein und schloss seine Übersetzung bis 1382 ab, wodurch die Heilige Schrift einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich gemacht wurde.
