In 1904, W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp landed on this little-known island with an irrepressible lust for adventure. The young man fell deeply in love with the "Island of the Gods" and its people in spite of their terrible reputation as war-like heathens. In the next three decades Nieuwenkamp explored the island, recording numerous details of native art and architecture of the era, resulting in the creation of more than 1,000 three major books, and scores of other publications.
