Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius war ein deutscher Physiker und Mathematiker und gilt als einer der zentralen Begründer der Thermodynamik. Durch seine Umformulierung von Sadi Carnots Prinzip, bekannt als Carnot-Zyklus, legte er die Wärmetheorie auf eine wahrere und solidere Grundlage. Seine wichtigste Arbeit von 1850 formulierte erstmals die Grundideen des zweiten Hauptsatzes der Thermodynamik. 1865 führte er das Konzept der Entropie und 1870 den Virialsatz ein.
