König Lear will sein Reich unter seinen drei Töchtern aufteilen, und zwar nach dem Maß ihrer Vaterliebe, die sie um die Wette bekunden sollen. Regan und Goneril überbieten sich in Liebesbezeugungen, die jüngste Tochter Cordelia erklärt nur schlicht ihre Liebe. Daraufhin enterbt sie ihr Vater. Regan und Goneril, die das Reich erben, verstoßen Lear. Cordelia kehrt als Ehefrau des Königs von Frankreich mit einer Armee zurück, um ihren Vater zu unterstützen, wird aber besiegt und schließlich getötet. Am Ende stirbt aus Kummer auch Lear. »›König Lear‹ ist immer wieder als Shakespeares größtes Werk, als das beste seiner Stücke beschrieben worden, als die Tragödie, in der sich seine zahlreichen Fähigkeiten am zahlreichsten entfalten.
